1-Day Saffron Introduction Short Course

Often referred to as red gold, saffron is the most expensive spice in the world. With this workshop you’ll get a quick, but thorough introduction to the propagation, growing, and harvesting of saffron. Spend a half day on a working saffron site and after a light lunch it’s time for theory and an opportunity to get all your questions answered. The following will be covered:

  • Plant description and growth cycle.
  • Corm storage.
  • Fertiliser program.
  • Field preparation, irrigation, and care.
  • Fungal treatment, pests, and problem animals.
  • Planting corms.
  • Harvesting and removing stigmas.
  • Grading, drying, and storage of stigmas.
  • Hygiene environment.
  • Dormant stage.
